This session will help participants…

  1. explain state-level guidelines relative to defining intellectual disability (ID), and to what degree states have modified IDEA definitions of ID;
  2. identify the influence of evaluation criteria on state-level identification practices in ID, and assess the trends in current eligibility requirements across states;
  3. evaluate the degree to which current state-level procedures for ID identification align with current research and guidance from professional organizations; and
  4. analyze how the recency of updates to guidance documents and state criteria may impact professional practices in school psychology.

In a field of diverse policy and procedures, examination of the state-level criteria and guidance on school-based evaluation in intellectual disability provides a snapshot of recent trends in professional practice.
