This session will help participants…

  1. gain insight as to how individually and collectively each support system is able to foster academic growth in COIC;
  2. name the challenges of identifying COIC within schools and ways of combating those challenges; and
  3. understand the importance of establishing and maintaining a home to school to community connection to best support and mitigate these students’ realities, such as low socioeconomic status.

Children of incarcerated caregivers (COIC) face numerous challenges, including academic success. Which relationship (teacher, mentor, present caregiver, and incarcerated caregiver) is the best predictor of higher academic outcomes for COIC?
