Learner Objectives

This session will help participants…

  1. learn about the state of existing teacher–student relationship (TSR) literature, and summarizing what is known and unknown about TSRs and Black boys;
  2. learn more about the schooling experiences of Black boys, and discuss the developmental significance of the transition to middle school; and
  3. explore possible strategies to inform systems-level practices (e.g., PBIS practices, professional inservice) and how school psychologists can contribute to practices ensuring the success of Black boys during middle school.

Description

Black middle school boys may experience conflicted relationships with teachers. Acquiring their perspectives can improve success. The study sought to understand Black boys’ experiences. Findings and implications will be discussed.
