This session will help participants…

  1. understand and discuss with their school-based colleagues and administrators how writing assessment formats may adversely influence group differences in student performance;
  2. critically consider the implications for the use and interpretation of writing assessments in elementary and middle school; and
  3. develop and implement a multicultural lens that critically examines current scoring practices, embracing the diversity of language, and promotes equity and fairness in writing assessments.

Description

This research study investigates group differences and bias in writing assessment against minoritized students. Practitioners will learn how assessment formats impact writing performance and consider the consequences for score interpretation.
