Learner Objectives

This session will help participants…

  1. help school psychologists use their role as consultants to ensure that teachers understand the unique needs of emergent bilingual youth;
  2. learn academic interventions adapted for emergent bilingual youth;
  3. learn guidelines for individual and group counseling and adapted social–emotional learning programs for emergent bilingual youth;
  4. learn equitable assessment practices for emergent bilingual youth, including qualitative and quantitative sources of data and other practices like creating local norms;
  5. critically analyze local, state, and federal laws and policy that guide school psychological practice; and
  6. increase family–school partnerships for emergent bilingual youth and their families.

Description

Many policies guide services for bilingual students, yet their applicability to everyday work of school psychologists can be unclear. This presentation provides practical strategies to increase equity for these students.
