  • Poster Session 1: Promoting Diversity and Multicultural Competence in School Psychology

Learner Objectives

This session will help participants…

  1. learn about the benefits of having social support and how it is associated with outcomes related to outsider and defender behavior;
  2. learn about racial and gender differences that may exist in adolescent bystander behavior and unique mechanisms or risk factors for groups that may underlie these differences; and
  3. learn about the implications of promoting positive peer and teacher relationships with students to build prosocial or help-seeking (e.g., defending) behavior and thus help reduce rates of peer victimization.

Description

Little is known about how social support promotes bystander and defender behavior during bullying incidents. This study examines this association and also explores potential gender and racial differences.
