Learner Objectives

This session will help participants…

  1. discuss the current state of Black youth’s social–emotional development in school settings;
  2. note culturally sustaining pedagogies and models that foster an explicit connection of SEL components to the life experiences of Black students;
  3. implement strategies to culturally adapt classroom-wide, group, and individual SEL interventions to meet the social–emotional needs of Black students; and
  4. identify future implications of incorporating culturally responsive SEL through a tier-system level of supports.

Description

Existing evidence-based SEL curricula do not meet the needs of Black youth. Learn to modify SEL interventions to be more culturally responsive to ensure equitable outcomes for Black youth.
