Learner Objectives

This session will help participants…

  1. identify the history leading to harmful autism-specific stigma and the state of lifetime outcomes for the autism community;
  2. describe how autism-specific stigma negatively impacts students with autism spectrum disorder;
  3. select an assessment for students’ sense of belonging and school membership;
  4. provide interventions to reduce implicit bias of peers toward individuals with ASD; and
  5. recognize the need for and direction of further research to reduce explicit stigmatized behaviors toward students with ASD.

Description

Autistic students experience public/enacted stigma resulting in internalized felt/self stigma generating negative self-beliefs, reduced self-worth. Moderating factors, outcomes, and recommendations to address autism-specific stigma, support student well-being will be presented.
