Learner Objectives

This session will help participants…

  1. gain a basic understanding of the parameters of special education law;
  2. appreciate the disconnect between so-called “best practice” in school psychology and legal standards, including FAPE; and
  3. gain an appreciation of the decades-long struggle to address disproportionate discipline of students with disabilities and of students of racial, cultural, or ethnic minorities.

Description

The parameters of special education law affect school psychology trainers and practitioners—whether they are aware of such parameters or not. Consequences for students and school psychologists can befall the unwary.
