Learner Objectives

This session will help participants…

  1. consider legal obligations in the manifestation determination review (MDR) process;
  2. consider legal obligations in assisting IEP teams in determining the student’s current least restrictive environment (LRE); and
  3. appreciate how assumptions regarding a student’s race/color/national origin/language, disability, socioeconomic status, or other characteristics may affect the team’s MDR decisions and LRE determinations.

Description

School teams confront determinations of appropriate placement for students with disabilities after a contentious disciplinary matter. Manifestation determination reviews and least restrictive environment decisions are among the most common and difficult team decisions.
