APA and NASP recognize cultural competence as an important feature integral to the practice of school psychology. Through a case study approach, this workshop will address how culture impacts students academically and behaviorally, the impact of educators’ actions and attitudes that may be detrimental to the success of students, and culturally responsive action plans that address these challenges both with students and adults.

Workshop Objectives:

This session will help participants

  1. identify and understand how students’ cultural context impacts their performance both academically and behaviorally,
  2. develop culturally sensitive interventions to address challenging problems that students exhibit, and
  3. understand how educational practitioners’ actions and attitudes might complicate a student’s challenges and develop strategies to reduce this conflict.

Prerequisite Knowledge

Basic diversity training or course. Familiarity with MTSS model.

Practical Tools

Suggested readings, strategies, and interventions to be used with both students and educational practitioners, and a culturally responsive checklist.
