This session will help participants…

  1. identify how cultural and linguistic factors influence the educational process,
  2. distinguish language and cultural differences from behavioral and academic difficulties, and
  3. apply prereferral and assessment considerations to their practices with emergent bilingual students.

Description

The assessment of emergent bilingual students is a complex process, particularly when distinguishing between linguistic and cultural differences and learning and emotional disabilities. This workshop will focus on understanding how cultural and linguistic factors influence the educational process. The workshop also will review how cultural and linguistic differences may influence academic and behavioral performance. Finally, it will review prereferral and assessment considerations to differentiate linguistic and cultural differences and behavioral and academic difficulties.
