Learner Objectives

This session will help participants…

  1. gain insight into the challenges with ethical multicultural assessment in the aftermath of COVID,
  2. increase multicultural competence in assessment by understanding trauma and its impacts on students of color, and
  3. build multicultural competence and ethical skills to best meet the therapeutic and assessment needs children of color as their world begins to emerge from COVID.

Description

Assessing the mental health and academic abilities of children of color is a challenge in normal times, but it is particularly difficult in the postpandemic world. The disproportionate impact of COVID-19 on children of color will reverberate for years to come. In addition to the pandemic trauma, other developmental and race-based traumas are often poorly understood, underevaluated, and not addressed in terms of appropriate interventions. This workshop will address culturally competent testing with an emphasis on trauma.
