This session is from the NASP 2021 Annual Convention

  • PMD: 2,6
  • Skill Level: Intermediate
  • Session 11: Consultation and Collaboration With Educators and Parents

Learner Objectives

This session will help participants…

  1. define the knowledge and skills that general education teachers should acquire to best support their students with ASD.
  2. review existing literature of teacher training and resources regarding practices for effective inclusion of students with ASD.
  3. provide feasible and effective strategies that practitioners can use to support general education teachers of inclusion classrooms.
  4. explain the need for improved training for general education teachers for students with ASD.

Students with ASD have been included in general education (GE) classrooms at increasingly higher rates. GE teachers often report a lack of knowledge and negative attitudes about inclusive practices for students with ASD. This poster will review the current literature regarding training and resources to improve GE teachers’ knowledge, attitudes, and relationships with students with ASD. Implications from this review can inform practitioners of methods to support GE teachers of students with ASD in inclusion classrooms.
