This session is from the NASP 2021 Annual Convention

  • PMD: 2,8
  • Skill Level: Introduction
  • Session 1: Promoting Safe and Positive Schools

Learner Objectives

This session will help participants…

  1. learn more about issues facing LGBTQ+ athletes in high school.
  2. understand coaches and athletic directors' thoughts on a gender nonbinary athlete participating on a sports team.
  3. understand what coaches' and athletic directors' believe should happen in regards to a gender nonbinary athlete participation on a sports team.
  4. understand that there needs to be more research done on the topic of gender nonbinary students in high school.

New Jersey high school coaches and athletic directors completed an online survey which included a vignette of an athlete who identified as gender nonbinary. Quantitative and qualitative analyses of the data suggested that the majority of participants had views that are inconsistent with current policies. There were concerns regarding fairness, safety, and inclusion. These findings have various implications, including the need for LGBTQ+ related training for coaches and athletic directors.
