English Proficiency's Relationship to ELLs' Spanish and English Assessment Performance

This session is from the NASP 2021 Annual Convention

  • PMD: 1,8
  • Skill Level: Intermediate
  • Session 4: Assessment and Intervention in an RTI Framework

Learner Objectives

This session will help participants…

  1. learn about native and second language in academic assessment.
  2. understand the unique and common elements of native and second language assessment data in RTI settings.
  3. understand equitable practices for using universal assessment data among ELLs.

Equitable assessment of ELLs in RTI requires continued improvement. One area that requires further investigation is the relationship of language of assessment with English language proficiency (ELP). ELP may not relate to academic performance equally across assessment languages. We examined the ELP scores at which performance between reading and math interim assessment in Spanish and English measurably differ. Attendees will learn about the use of multiple languages of assessment within the RTI context.
