  2. fill their school psychology toolbox with resources to begin implementing SBMI in their districts.
  3. address ethical concerns of implementing SBMI and provide suggestions for best practice.


This poster presentation covers the development/history of motivational interviewing (MI). It specifically addresses motivational interviewing in the school setting (school-based motivationalinterviewing, or SBMI). SBMI entails changing the behaviors of the adults around students and/or directly motivating students to adopt academic enabling behaviors and reduce academic disabling behaviors. This poster presentation includes recommendations for best practice, ethical considerations for implementing SBMI, and addresses where future research is needed.
