Expanded Mental Health Role of School Psychologists Within MTSS

This session is from the NASP 2021 Annual Convention

  • PMD: 4,5
  • Skill Level: Advanced

Learner Objectives

This session will help participants…

  1. describe the mental health needs of students, as well as conceptualize multitiered components for providing school-based mental health services.
  2. identify their role as school-based mental health providers within each component of the MTSS framework.
  3. develop personal strategies to implement MTSS mental health services to overcome barriers and advance their practice as school-based mental health providers.
  4. advocate and provide leadership for a comprehensive continuum of mental health services to school boards and policy makers.

The prevalence of mental health concerns of youth is troubling, with approximately one in six students meeting the criteria for a mental health disorder (Whitney & Peterson, 2019). The lack of access to services is even more critical. School psychologists are uniquely positioned in schools to provide leadership for a continuum of school-based mental health services. This paper will provide an overview of multitiered system of support (MTSS) and the practice of school psychologists.
