Learner Objectives
This session will help participants…
- explain the importance of cultural validity considerations for social–emotional learning (SEL) programs and practices.
- evaluate the cultural validity and acceptability of the SSIS-SEL Edition Classwide Intervention Program.
- describe how cultural validity of class-wide interventions fits into a comprehensive role as outlined by the NASP Practice Model.
Description
Concerns that social–emotional learning (SEL) may overlook or limit exploration of equity issues underscore the importance of conducting acceptability research with culturally and linguistically diverse stakeholders. As primary implementers, teachers can provide valuable insights about universal SEL programming relative to their classroom context. We present cultural validity ratings of the SSIS-SEL Edition Classwide Intervention Program (Elliott & Gresham, 2017) and describe considerations for school psychologists who engage in data-based decision making about SEL implementation.
