School psychologists handle some of the most sensitive information in a school district. The responsibility to keep this information secure and private has become more challenging in light of how much technology is used to facilitate interventions and assessments. This workshop will give school psychologists the tools to continue protecting students’ information while still getting the most out of what technology has to offer.

Workshop Objectives:

This session will help participants

  1. identify three ethical standards that relate to using technology,
  2. describe questions that should be asked prior to using particular technologies to ensure the maintenance of student confidentiality and privacy,
  3. identify common ethical pitfalls when using technology in their own practice, and
  4. name three federal laws related to student privacy and records.

Prerequisite Knowledge

General use of technology being employed in practice by school psychologists, including cloud computing. Knowledge of special education record keeping in their state.

Practical Tools

Steps to take to ensure privacy of student records when using technology, instructions on how to encrypt documents on the computer and cloud, and how to secure passwords and accounts.
