You use many tools in your daily interactions with teachers, parents, and adolescents, facilitating behavior change to support success. One evidence-based practice, Motivational Interviewing, can be a terrific addition to your toolbox! Both a clinical practice and conversational style, MI is founded on the belief that how one interacts with a client affects that client’s motivations for change. Join us as we introduce and practice the fundamental skills and spirit of MI in a light-hearted and engaging atmosphere.

 

Workshop Objectives:

 

This session will help participants

  1. describe the foundational theory of Motivational Interviewing,
  2. practice utilizing the micro-skills of Motivational Interviewing, and
  3. apply the four processes of Motivational Interviewing to various clinical and consultative scenarios.

 

Prerequisite Knowledge

Some familiarity with MI would be beneficial, but not mandatory.

 

Practical Tools

  1. OARS – the micro skills of MI.
  2. The MI Processes (engage, focus, evoke, plan)
  3. The MI Spirit (Partnership, Acceptance, Compassion, Evocation).
