Project SMILE is a federally funded Mental Health Service Professional Development Demonstration Grant awarded to the ACU School Psychology program for a duration of 5 years. The purpose of the grant is to increase the number of school psychologists trained to serve high-needs districts. Project SMILE provides both enhanced training opportunities and funding support to school psychology graduate students. Students receive a $20,000 per year stipend to support their studies. In return, students provide social skills training and practicum services to grant partner school districts Students also receive funding for travel to professional conferences, including the National Association of School Psychologists.

The 2010 NASP Standards for Graduate Preparation of School Psychologists defines a school setting as “…one in which the primary goal is the education of students of diverse backgrounds, characteristics, abilities, disabilities, and needs.
