Learner Objectives
This session will help participants…
- identify the purpose and requirements of manifestation determination reviews (MDRs) and explain the challenges associated with determining if a student's disability is directly related to their behavior, as required by the relationship test.
- evaluate the effectiveness of using descriptive observational data to answer the relationship test and provide examples of how this approach can be used to document changes in a student's behavior that are not related to their disability.
- analyze the use of functional analysis (FA) data as a methodology to answer the relationship test in MDRs and explain how FA can provide powerful evidence of the contextual nature of behavior and its implications for determining the relationship between behavior and disability.
Description
We will review the manifestation determination review and the problems associated with the process. Next, we will examine how functional analyses can answer questions and alleviate problems in this process.
