Learner Objectives

This session will help participants…

  1. distinguish between dyslexia screening, a dyslexia diagnosis, and identification of a SLD consistent with best practices measurement guidelines;
  2. recognize dyslexia as the most common type of learning disability that may manifest as a learning disability;
  3. recognize basic reading, reading fluency, reading comprehension, and written expression as legitimate elements of a SLD diagnoses;
  4. identify types of assessment tools and relate them to relevant diagnoses, consistent with data-based, ethical decision making; and
  5. integrate, synthesize, and communicate assessment results with confidence, sensitive to inclusive best practices.

Description

This paper describes screening/identifying/diagnosing dyslexia best practices, including controversies (e.g., Is dyslexia best diagnosed as an SLD?) and information describing assessment tools (e.g., Shaywitz DyslexiaScreen, Tests of Dyslexia).
