Friday, February 16, 2024
5:00 PM–5:50 PM CST

  • PMD: 3
  • Cost: Included in Registration
  • Skill Level: Introduction
  • Poster Session 8: Promoting Academic Success

Learner Objectives

This session will help participants…

  1. become aware of how reading fluency has been defined by the National Reading Panel;
  2. understand the relationship between phonological processing speed and reading fluency;
  3. learn about the nature of the orthographic lexicon and how it influences reading fluency; and
  4. provide school psychologists with information that will help them consult with teachers about reading fluency.

Description

We tested Torgesen and colleagues’ hypothesis that reading fluency is largely the by-product of the size of a student’s sight vocabulary. Our evidence supported this hypothesis.
