Learner Objectives

This session will help participants…

  1. increase their awareness about the different experiences, systems, and academic interventions detained youth have experienced prior to entering public schools;
  2. learn about the level/type of educational and academic services youth involved with IDCs have experienced prior to entering public schools; and
  3. learn about the educational supports and services that can be provided to youth involved in IDCs to help them continue to learn while managing drastic transitions and promote healthy development and adjustment to their new school experiences.

Description

This presentation reports results of a qualitative study where workers of immigration detention centers (IDCs) share the academic experiences and effects of immigrant youth prior to entering U.S. public schools.
