Learner Objectives

This session will help participants…

  1. learn the key issues in reviews of reading intervention literature to determine the most effective interventions;
  2. understand why many popular intervention approaches are of limited value;
  3. know the most effective approaches to prevention of reading difficulties, both in word-level reading and reading comprehension; and
  4. learn the limits of the research literature on specific intervention strategies and techniques and how school psychologists can leverage their training in problem solving and learning theory to make best practice applications of the more general reading intervention findings.

Description

The goal of intervention-oriented assessment in reading is to determine precisely why students struggle in reading and to inform more effective Tier 2 and Tier 3 instruction.
