Learner Objectives

This session will help participants…

  1. participants will understand the characteristics of older students in China who are acquiring English literacy.
  2. comparisons will be based on the performance of good and poor English learners from a Chinese middle school that have been identified using norm based on English version of DIBLES.
  3. participants will be introduced to the applicability of DIBELS in Chinese middle school students and performance differences between good and poor English readers.


Many foreign students begin to learn English at an older age. The process is quite different from English native speakers, and some encounter great difficulties. DIBELS is a widely used assessment in the U.S. to screen for early reading disabilities. Attendees will learn the applicability of DIBELS for use with Chinese middle school students and how this tool has been employed to identify and assist older students to acquire English in a school-based setting.
