Learner Objectives

This session will help participants…

  1. develop and deepen their ethical understanding of school-based psychological practices in assessment and intervention of social and emotional learning (SEL) competencies;
  2. articulate issues related to equity, inclusion, and social justice regarding SEL competencies for school-age youth; and
  3. outline a framework to provide culturally competent SEL assessments and interventions within schools and community settings that serve diverse learners.

School psychologists have an integral role in promoting not only the academic development of youth but also their social and emotional development. In practice, school psychologists have a responsibility to provide evidence-based assessment and intervention practices. This presentation will review issues involved in the equitable, as well as ethical, provision of high-quality school-based psychological services to promote social–emotional learning competencies.
