Learner Objectives
This session will help participants…
- learn the up-to-date research on general grit and domain-specific grit in adolescents.
- be informed of the psychometric properties and utilities of the scale measuring academic grit.
- gain a better understanding of how to assess academic grit among adolescents, which provides the foundation for fostering grit through education and school-based services.
Description
Grit is known as perseverance and passion for long-term goals. However, a psychometrically sound measure of domain-specific grit is needed. This study examined the psychometric properties of the recently developed Academic Grit Scale (AGS) in a diverse adolescent sample (N = 417; ages 14–18). Exploratory factor analysis results indicated a one-factor solution combines three facets of grit (Determination, Resilience, and Focus) and explained 70.132% of variance in academic grit. Implications and future directions will be discussed.
